Roadworthy Testing
A Certificate of Roadworthiness (roadworthy certificate) is required when selling a truck or other heavy road vehicle in Victoria.
The certificate is also needed to re-register a vehicle and in situations where you are required to clear a vehicle defect notice, or a notice of unroadworthiness.
A roadworthy certificate protects both the seller and buyer of a truck, bus, trailer or other heavy vehicle. It also provides assurance to other road users and the general public that the vehicle is fit to be on the road.
What does a roadworthy inspection cover?
A roadworthy inspection is a check of key vehicle components. The test ensures components are not worn or deteriorated, and that your truck is safe for regular road use.

Major safety-related items tested include:
- Wheels and tyres
- Steering, braking systems and suspension
- Seats and seat belts
- Headlights and indicators
- Windscreen, wipers and washers
- The vehicle structure
- Other safety-related features on your truck’s body, engine or chassis
A Certificate of Roadworthiness can only be issued by an accredited license vehicle tester operating from a nominated testing garage, workshop or service station. As part of our all-round service, Macquarrie Dandenong provides roadworthy testing for all makes and models of trucks and other heavy vehicles. We will ensure your truck is fit for purpose and in sound operating condition.
What are the main advantages of roadworthy testing?
A roadworthy certificate proves that a truck, bus or other vehicle complies with all road regulations for safety. It is also required for getting a vehicle registered. Here are the 3 main functions of a roadworthy certificate.
Becoming an owner:
If purchasing a truck, bus or other heavy vehicle for use on the road, you will naturally want to transfer ownership into your name as soon as possible. If you don’t have a valid roadworthy certificate for your purchase you can’t become the official owner. Ask the person you are purchasing from for the certificate.
Registering your truck:
It is illegal to drive an unregistered truck, with hefty fines to pay if you are caught. You cannot register a truck in Victoria without a valid roadworthy certificate. Be sure to have a roadworthy certificate before heading off to register your truck.
Safety first:
A roadworthy certificate states that your truck is safe and without defects. At Macquarrie Dandenong, our accredited roadworthy specialists make sure your truck is 100% ready to hit the road, for everyone’s sake.
Is a roadworthy inspection the same as a general mechanical inspection?
A roadworthy inspection checks the main safety features of your truck. It is not an inspection of mechanical reliability or general condition of the vehicle. Roadworthy testing isn’t a check of non-safety related accessories and components such as your truck’s air conditioner, rear window demister, rear window wipers or electric windows.
At Macquarrie Dandenong, we offer roadworthy inspections as well as regular safety inspections conducted quarterly or annually to keep your trucks and buses in top shape so they can stay on the road longer. For peace of mind while on the road, a comprehensive assessment of your vehicle’s overall condition will meet your needs. We also conduct pre-purchase inspections so you can have confidence when purchasing a new or used truck.
